Happy Anniversary!

Cocktails in Historic San Diego has been going strong for TWO YEARS now. In that time we’ve met some great people, visited some beautiful places, and had much too much fun. This month we return to the scene of our very first crime, visiting two – count them, TWO! – of San Diego’s most historic, and most haunted locations.

October always boasts our most spine-tingling event. This year will be no exception. Please join us at 6:00pm on Thursday, October 29th for no-host cocktails and socializing in the Palace Bar of the Horton Grand Hotel. We will learn about the fascinating history of this local landmark and its famous and infamous guests . . . some of which apparently never left.

Double-Feature!

A special private tour of the William Heath Davis House across the street will begin at 7pm for a measly $5 donation. This is the oldest surviving structure in downtown or “New Town” San Diego. It now houses the Gaslamp Quarter Historical Foundation Headquarters, their museum, and several, shall we say, less corporeal inhabitants.

Cocktail attire is requested, preferably black in honor of the dearly departed who may choose to join in!

We look forward to seeing you there,

-- Kristine and Paul

Sadly, due to Technical difficulties with the restored organ, the concert scheduled for September 13th was postponed at the last minute. The good news is that I am told the rescheduled date is September 27th at the original time of 2pm. Tickets purchased for the 13th will be honored at the door on the 27th. Those of you who do not already have tickets may still purchase them at the theater website here. Tickets are still available for as little as $20!

Once again, Cocktails in Historic San Diego joins the Balboa Theatre Foundation for the premier performance of the newly restored Wonder Morton Organ. This is a once-in a lifetime opportunity to actually be a PART of an historic event. I so hope you can join us. The Balboa Theatre Foundation promises that we will all be "among the first to hear the vibrant sounds of this extremely complex instrument that has become 'the heartbeat of the Balboa Theatre'."

"Only four of these Wonder Morton Organs remain in existence
and ours has been brilliantly restored to its original 1929 condition.
Experience how one instrument can capture the sounds of a full orchestra.
From jazz to Broadway to classical and more, you'll hear the versatility of
this spectacular gift that the Balboa Theatre Foundation has given
to the people of San Diego."
-- Balboa Theatre Foundation Website

POST CONCERT:

On the 13th, those CIHSD members who attended the post-concert, no-host happy hour at Lincoln's Bar and Grill in the Courtyard Marriott were treated to a great tour of what was once the historic San Diego Trust and Savings Bank building. Our tour included an exclusive look at the 1500 square foot Presidential Suite, an indescribable viewing of San Diego from the cupola atop the hotel, and a visit to the impenetrable underground bank vaults. We plan to repeat the tour and happy hour after the rescheduled performance, with tours beginning around 5:30. You will find the Marriott located three blocks away from the Balboa Theater at 530 Broadway.

Trust me, you're going to want to be there. I can hardly wait to do it again.

This month we hit North County to relax in this late 19th-century, once-private residence in the heart of old Carlsbad. Come enjoy the ocean breezes, the camaraderie of like-minded history buffs, and a little special musical treat for summer!

Please join us for no-host wine and cocktails (and a selection from the full restaurant menu, if you so desire). We will be meeting in the bar area sometime around 6:30 pm to allow time for some of our San Diego members to arrive. A brief overview of the history of the space and of Carlsbad itself will be provided beginning around 7:30.

Casual cocktail attire requested.

See you then!

In the midst of what is being called "The Great Recession", our notably uptown group goes downtown for a recession-proof, but no less historic cocktails event.

This place has been serving local fishermen and local drinkers for generations, and from what I hear, they make a mean burger. As per usual, we will be learning about the history of the place, and the stories behind some of the intriguing items adorning the walls.

Fair warning, the place will probably be pretty jam-packed, but as they say, "misery loves company". You might as well come down and commiserate over the current economy at one of the friendliest places in town.

Watch this space for additional details in the coming week.

See you there!

Construction of this was the practice run for the men who went on to build perhaps the most iconic building in all of San Diego. The original home of the Scripps Institute, this is a one of a kind gem you may have never even noticed.

A couple of hours at our first stop and then we'll stroll to another, often-overlooked gem. Finally, we round out the evening at a hotel with a very tenuous tie to an infamous British noble and a cantina known for delicioso Margaritas!

This month we welcome the imminent arrival of SUMMER by holding our event bayside! Please join us for bayview no-host cocktails and an brief overview of how Mission Bay evolved from "ill-smelling and unattractive mud flats" to the gorgeous, fun-filled tourist destination it is today. We will be literally steps from the water, so bring a wrap in case it gets chilly!

This month we will be will be celebrating the birth of a local legend, infamous to the end.

This Cocktails in Historic Places event will hearken back to an era when San Diego was "wild cowtown". Back then, this was one of the places you would have gone to "get on the outside of six or seven hot biscuits" and wash it down with "red-eye". Just mind you don't make it a habit or you might "raise blisters on your elbows and make your hat a size too small".

Spurs in a tangle?

Come join us at the watering hole, and we'll provide the translation.

This month's Swellegant Cocktails in Historic Places event will take place at a jewel of the San Diego skyline. Now dwarfed slightly by some of its much taller neighbors, the El Cortez hotel once towered over San Diego as far back as 1927. Since its conversion to condominium homes, this once active hub of San Diego society, political giants and hollywood icons is no longer open to the general public, BUT - -

This one night, for one half an hour, it will be open for us.

Please join me on Thursday, February 26th at 6:00pm for no-host cocktails at Sole Luna Cafe and a peek inside this enduring landmark. You will find Sole Luna at street level hugging the southwest corner of the El Cortez. Please note that the tour must begin promptly at 7:30.

As always, Cocktail attire is requested, and vintage cocktail attire heartily encouraged!

“The Cradle of the Navy”. That’s what they used to call this place.

Built in 1921, San Diego’s Naval Training Station was built to provide sailors with the skills and education needed to operate increasingly sophisticated battleships. During the peak of World War II, the population of Liberty station had reached 33,000 and a total of 41 distinct schools had been established. It was officially closed in 1997, sat unused for nearly a decade, and finally reopened recently as part of a North Bay revitalization effort featuring restaurants, shops and a variety of other facilities.

Please join us at for no-host food and cocktails as we look back on San Diego’s contribution to American Naval history.

Cocktail attire requested. Vintage cocktail attire heartily encouraged.

We look forward to seeing you there!
